The ReallySmartHouse scheme was jointly funded by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the Eastern Region. The funding was awarded to improve energy efficiency and renewable energy in Council properties. In total over 40 properties have been retrofitted including the installation of smart meters, photovoltaic panels and insulation.
Essex Insulation insulated a number of British Iron & Steel Federation Houses (BISF) as part of the project. External Wall Insulation was applied with a reinforcing steel cage to give the properties added stability and to lengthen their lifespan.
There were also ten under-insulated bungalows in Southend that Essex Insulation transformed into highly efficient ‘Smart Homes’. The construction of the bungalows meant that there were high levels of heat loss. Cliff Eves, Operations Director at Essex Insulation commented, ‘The project board wanted the exterior of the bungalows to look the same as they had before work commenced whilst also delivering a significant improvement in the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. The Kingspan External Wall System that we used allowed us to achieve this.’
In celebration of the success of the project, Southend Borough Council held a ReallySmartHouse Awards Event on 25th March. Mike Easdon, Sales & Marketing Director at Essex Insulation was presented with a certificate of ReallySmartHouse Accreditation at the event, in recognition of the company’s contribution to the success of the project.
